Background:
Dr. Henry Givens, president of Harris-Stowe State University, also served as chairman of the statewide commission for the celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday for the past 25 years. The commission wanted to generate additional media coverage for the silver anniversary of the celebration in 2011.
Audience:
Adults and children in the St. Louis area, as well as the surrounding communities.
Objectives:
-Increase awareness of the statewide activities, as well as the kick-off celebration
-Honor the legacy of Dr. King
-Acknowledge the members of the commission and their service
Responsibilities:
Schumacher Creative developed all press materials, media alerts and media packets associated for the event. The firm also pitched the event to appropriated media outlets and handled all pre-event, on-site and post-event media relations efforts.
Results:
The kick-off celebration enjoyed record attendance of more than 1,500 people. Media present at the event included: KSDK, KTVI, Fox 2, KMOV, KMOX, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Associated Press. In addition, a feature article on Commission President, Dr. Henry Givens, ran on the front page of the Sunday Post-Dispatch on January 16, 2011.
